鈥淎fter my first year at UAlbany, I was already considered a junior because of all the credits that I earned in high school.鈥

Troy High School graduate Katie A. always knew college was the next step on her educational path so it was only logical that she’d want to get a head start.

Katie, now at the University at Albany, left Troy High in 2018 with more than 30 hours of transferable college credit thanks to College in the High School (CIHS) courses she took in her junior and senior years. Taking college-level courses while still in high school helped her understand what to expect when she moved on to the university. It also saved her and her family a lot of money in tuition.

“I was able to get almost all of my Gen Ed classes out of the way before college. After my first year at UAlbany, I was already considered a junior because of all the credits that I earned in high school. It allows me to have more freedom with my courses. It’s exciting to think about the time I have left and what I can do with it,” she said.

Katie said she now has the opportunity to double major in math and psychology, two of her main academic interests. She also said the small class sizes of her CIHS courses allowed her to get to know her professors, something not always possible in a university lecture hall with 200 other students.

“Senior year in high school I was taking almost all college courses and once I figured out I was going to UAlbany it was great because I knew they would take all my credits. I would definitely recommend trying these courses if you have the chance,” she said. “I’m glad I took advantage of it.”
